Appreciation

Why is it that we only choose to appreciate
someone when they die?
is it because we will never see them again?
before, if we didn't see them,
at least we knew they were there
maybe its because now we know they are gone
gone forever
Or is it because we don't know to appreciate
in the first place?
why do we build statues of people when they die?
why not while they are living?
must you die first, before you can really be
appreciated?
Is it because we find it difficult to appreciate
each other in the first place?
Why do we tell stories of remembrance to the
young ones when someone dies, and not stories
of when they are alive
Why do we visit them more when they are in the ground,
than while they are here with us?
Why are they in our prayers more when they are gone,
instead of when they are alive?
Do we learn from this and appreciate more now?
appreciate while there is life, instead of death?
Maybe we first need to learn to appreciate ourselves,
before we can others?
